Criminal History Background Check

A criminal history record inquiry, sometimes referred to as a FBI Identification Report, contains information connected to fingerprints taken from arrests, federal employment, naturalization, or military service. Arrest related fingerprint information includes the name of the agency that submitted the fingerprints to the FBI, date of arrest, the charge, and the disposition of the arrest. This includes any misdemeanor or felony charges. However, keep in mind that this reveals arrests in the state of residence only. Anyone can request a copy of their criminal history record at any time. Information such as name, sex, date of birth, social security number, and address are required. The level of accuracy diminishes without birth date or social security. Common names are also difficult to search because there can be more than one person with the same name. If an arrest has been legally expunged by a judge it will not show up on the report. Cases such as international adoption and foreign employment may also require a report check. States vary on their requirements for both requesting a criminal report and for what agencies are allowed to disclose. Inquirers should check the laws in their state. Employers and landlords are most likely to request criminal background checks of their potential employees and tenants. This helps them evaluate the level of risk involved with their potential employees and tenants. Essentially, these report requests are for the protection and well-being of everyone involved.
